This data layer depicts tracts of land (parcels) administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Hawaii, a portion of Nevada, and the U.S. Trust Territories in the Pacific Ocean. The tracts of land included in this inventory compose National Wildlife Refuges, National Fish Hatcheries, FWS administrative offices and other conservation areas.
This feature class is used primarily to publish U.S. Fish and Wildlife land status maps which are a hardcopy inventory of lands at each field station. This layer is also used in GIS applications related to refuge planning and land management.
The FwsInterest feature class is an aggregated data layer derived by appending separate field station feature data sets into a single set which is easier to distribute. The spatial and positional accuracy of the tracts included in this inventory will vary depending on elements of the legal description and the spatial accuracy of source data (if used). Data source/lineage information is not listed in this document but is maintained for each station boundary and can be requested if necessary. We do strive to improve the accuracy of our boundaries and do so when better base data or surveys are available. This is a draft metadata document and currently, FWS is developing a standard template that will superseed the information described herein.

Each refuge boundary is produced using a local projected UTM zone. These are stored in individual personal geodatabases. The personal geodatabases are projected and appended into a single personal geodatabase that is unprojected (Geographic), this is the distributed copy.
